If you’re joining us in reading through Isaiah and Jeremiah, today’s reading is Isaiah chapter 28 and the devotion is taken from verses 23-26. “Listen and hear my voice; pay attention and hear what I say. When a farmer plows for planting, does he plow continually? Does he keep on breaking up and harrowing the soil? When he has leveled the surface, does he not sow caraway and scatter cummin? Does he not plant wheat in its place, barley in its plot, and spelt in its field? His God instructs him and teaches him the right way.” I’m reminded of a story about a game warden who is trying to capture a fishermen who appears to be very good at catching his daily limit. It seems that day after day, week after week the sports fishermen would bring in his haul. One day the game warden went fishing with him. And after they had gotten to the fisherman’s favorite fishing area they prepared to catch fish. After pulling out his fishing rod and placing it on the bow of the boat he reached into the tackle box brought out a stick of dynamite lighted it and through it the water. The resulting explosion brought many fish to the surface. The game warden was aghast. “You can not do that he cried, that’s against the law.” At that point the fishermen calmly reach into his tackle box withdrew and lighted a second stick of dynamite and handed it to the game warden. “Now,” he said, “are we going to fish or we going to talk about it?” After God has prepared you for something he wants you to get out and do it. He doesn’t want you to sit around claiming you need more training. He wants you to begin to execute his plan. He doesn’t want benchwarmers. We are all on the varsity and were all supposed be ready to play every play. Just like in any sport or activity our need for practice continues. That doesn’t mean we just continually practice. There are times when you’re on the sideline and there are times when you’re in the game. You need to make the most of each situation. Today, get ready to go on the field. Your practice time is ended; it’s time to play the game.
