Ike Cech shared this with us. The sailor has a check shirt which is very common for sailors. I think his underjacket is striped with creases going across not checked. I suggest this because when I worked on underjackets (& waistcoats unpublished) none in Rhode Island runaways were checked. I found the striped underjackets were often made of either wool flannel, linsey woolsey or cotton (possibly a linen/cotton blend). The lines of both the check and stripe are made narrow with more white which is consistent with what we are finding in the fabrics in the Foundling Museum. I also like the way the man seated is wearing his neck cloth neatly wrapped around his neck, tied & tucked into his waistcoat.
