Ill never understand why the law enforcement community in this country isnt leading the charge for sane gun laws. Reducing the number of guns in the wrong hands would make their jobs infinitely safer. As well as making everyone else in the larger society much safer. Because, as the writer points out, the huge number of gun floating around forces cops to always assume that the person they are dealing with might be carrying a gun. And that approach will inevitably lead to tragic accidents. I dont think that most cops go out on patrol thinking that they would like to shoot someone that day, but they are always prepared to. And the fact that prosecutors, and grand juries will probably not indict them for using lethal force surely makes it more likely that they will reach for the gun. Better safe than sorry, right?
