Ill start off saying this, I am not a New York Yankees fan. I heard today that Derek Jeter is retiring at the end of the season. Now I have watched this guy play ball since the 1990s. And as New York Mets fan, as a guy who roots for the Boston Red Sox every time they face the Yankees, I must say Jeter is one of the greatest to ever play the game. Ive seen him dive into crowds, pulling off plays most others would just let go. I remember hearing a story that he would go out clubbing every night. And when they asked management why theyd let him just go out partying every night, either it was Torre or Steinbrener who simply said, Look at his numbers. Whey they start to slip, well talk to him about his activities outside of baseball. Hes a true example of work hard, play hard. And with staying with the same team his entire career, he truly is an oddity among modern day players. This season I look forward to seeing more amazing plays from him and hope for the first time ever the Yankees make the playoffs just so he can play a bit longer. It really feels to me like the retirement of Micheal Jordan all over again. The sport will never be the same without him.
