Im Losing My Hair * Horses start shedding their coats as the days (photoperiods) get longer. The long hairs can be brushed out over a period of about a month, leaving a short, smooth, shiny coat. * Show horses can be tricked into keeping a year-round short and shiny coat, by having them wear an insulated horse blanket and staying inside a warm box stall with a light set to a timer. The light is kept on for a few hours after the sun sets, making the daylight hours appear long. If the light goes off by accident, or the horse gets chilled, a winter coat may start growing in an odd manner, with sporadic growth of long , coarse hairs that are often called elephant hairs.
