Im a bit of a loss as to why Hamas tunnels are considered such a surprise, or especially sophisticated. As a military art, tunnelling is well over 2,000 years old. Gaza has a massive commercial tunnel industry because of blockade--hundreds or thousands of experienced workers, and indeed you could find entire streets in Rafah selling compressors, tools, etc to support it. The tunnels themselves are not all that complicated: some wooden or precast concrete reinforcement, sometimes simple rails for dirt removal, and often an electrical line. Despite all the press reporting on Iranian and North Korean advice, it is all pretty obvious stuff and I really doubt anyone in Hamas needed much in the way of pointers, beyond either a basic knowledge of military history and/or an internet connection.
