Im baack! Did you miss me? Wait. Dont answer that. LOL I accompanied a dear friend to Mississippi for the funeral of her brother. The rural folk of Mississippi are kind, polite, God-fearing and helpful. They made a long, arduous trip easier, and the members of the little Hopewell Baptist Church, in whose cemetery my friends brother was laid to rest, treated us as if we were their closest family, when they had never laid eyes on us before the Sunday afternoon of the funeral. Never mind such details. His widow had attended church there as a child, and her parents are buried next to him. That was enough to make us all family in their eyes. It seems that in the bigger cities and larger churches, greater commonalities must be found, shared interests, tastes and/or backgrounds. In a small, country church, however, all you ever seem to need to connect with the body of believers there is Jesus. Just Jesus. If you have Him, youre part of them. In our Bigger Is Always Better world, we somehow think that bigger has more to offer. But doesnt bigger just have to get broken down into smaller before its of any real benefit? You cant eat a whole cake in a single bite, after all. No, we enjoy it piece by piece, bit by bit. I sure found lots of Jesus in that little Mississippi church last Sunday afternoon, and I noticed that of the 25 enrolled in Sunday School, 21 had attended, and all of them had studied their lesson beforehand. Wonder how many big churches can boast those percentages? This wasnt a trip I would have chosen to make, frankly, but Im glad I did. It does my heart good to know I can find Jesus in a little church thirty miles from nowhere in Mississippi. Makes me wonder how many times Ive driven right past Him without any inkling that He and His were there.
