Im conflicted about Google Glass. I see something like this app and I get really excited for the technology: glass-apps.org/ghostrunner-glass-app But youve got to stop for a minute and consider the social impacts of attaching the internet to your face with a camera and walking around in public with it. How often do you find yourself out in the wild and theres some dude with a camera trained on his POV and constantly recording without asking anyones consent? Id say not that often -- its generally considered rude and people dont like it. The first time I ran into someone with Google Glass I was playing Magic: The Gathering at my local card shop and this dude had them on the whole time. It freaked me out and I found myself avoiding him as much as possible. I dont want to be that person (neither the freak-er nor the freak-ee). Theres already a high degree of stigma associated with people wearing Glass in public: techcrunch/2013/01/28/glassholes/ Can people be socially responsible with technology like this? Sure. And some will. But some (Im betting a lot) wont. Once Glass goes public I dont doubt that augmented reality will become part of reality in that not only will thousands of people start wearing Glass, but competitors will copy the technology and were going to be inundated by walking information and media gatherers. Its almost enough to make someone want to stay inside. Or move to Montana. Though I think the adage what you dont know cant hurt you is still as true as it ever was. Low-profile and/or completely stealth AR devices may stem the anxiety for some of us less paranoid individuals.
