Im finishing William Winter and the New Mississippi, A Biography, by Charles C Bolton, who is heads the history dept at the Univ of North Carolina at Greensboro. The book details Mr Winters triumphs, as well as his defeats (most notably, Winters stunning loss in the 1975 governors race to the dim-witted Cliff Finch. And doesnt THAT sound familiar!) , throughout his forty-plus yr career in politics. Bolton depicts Winter as a principled politician, who tried his best to serve his state honestly and in a professional manner. Although even Winter occasionally made compromises he was uncomfortable making in order to maintain his political viability during the rabid mania to preserve White Supremacy in post-Brown v Board of Education (1954) Miss. Still William Winter remains among the few Miss pols one could vote for and not Regret it the Next Day.
