Im glad for many things. Kirk Herbstreit getting called out in the article below. And second is Jim Rome getting blasted for opening his mouth and publicly calling band members dorks. I hate posting things on Facebook and havent done so in a long while because Im always afraid of instigating a negative interaction between people. But I must share that where I live/work is an exception to all of this crap. Over half of the students in the Tavares HS band participate in other activities. These include organizations ranging from key club to national honor society and sports ranging from bowling to football (and everything in between). They are amazing! As a new teacher, guess who were/are the most welcoming people on campus? EVERYONE! Yes Im the band director which translated apparently means - the head band dork, but no one treats me like that! All of our faculty and staff treat me like family and a human being. I used to feel like I was out of my element around athletes and that I am just an unwanted band dork. But I feel welcome everywhere on campus including the THS football field house. My point is, we all are impressionable and we instinctively learn so much from the way that others interact. Especially those in the spotlight. So here is my New Years resolution and it goes back to a lesson from my mom. If you dont have anything nice to say, dont say anything at all. We are going to continue to be human, but Its time to be better. Strive for perfection, and Go BIG RED.
