Im happy to hear construction is finally commencing this week on the United States first true high speed rail system in California. A few years ago, I got to ride a British Class 373 which is featured in this video. The new, much sleeker 374s have a higher operating speed of 320 kph (200 mph), and are phasing out the older 373. Here you can see the beautiful British countryside and train from the air. The M2 highway has a speed limit of 113 kph (70 mph), similar to most of the U.S. Interstate highway system. The 373 is doing about 258 kph (160 mph) when crossing the Medway Viaduct. At 2:55 you get an excellent opportunity for a visual comparison between HSR and motorcar travel.
