Im having a discussion with an Evangelical Protestant friend of mine about the Orthodox church. Our newest comparison revolves around the church building itself. She states that the church is just a building and there is no need to beautify it with icons, and other riches, because it will all pass away. Furthermore, it uses money that is seemingly hoarded into the church, instead of being given to the poor or used for other, more generous/humanitarian purposes. After all, Jesus preached in all places, so why not have church in a soup kitchen serving others, in a plain building for fellowship purposes, or out in Gods creation? Does anyone have a response to this? Ive tried explaining it, but Im not sure I know how to approach it, as I am cradle Orthodox, and its hard for me to see anything other than a beautifully ornate church dedicated towards our material sacrifice and the glory of God. Thank you!
