Im incredibly sad to hear that a Sophomore at Georgetown University has passed away from Meningitis B. My thoughts and prayers are with her family at this time. Earlier this year, I penned an Op-Ed in the Star Tribune that warned that our students are at risk of contracting MenB as the FDA continues to drag its feet with the approval of a vaccine that would protect them. This vaccine is approved in 32 different countries (including Canada, Australia, and the EU) but isnt available in the United States. Last month, I traveled to Canada with Alicia Stillman to receive a vaccine and show the absurdity of having to travel to another country to receive protection from this disease. Alicia tragically lost her daughter, Emily, to the Meningitis B bacteria. Im heartbroken to learn that others will have to go through the same nightmare of the losing a daughter from something that is completely preventable.
