Im not big on cop shows and murder mysteries generally bore me - and Im quite aware of how hyperbolic it will sound - but I just dont see any way around stating that TRUE DETECTIVE is probably the greatest show I have ever seen on television. The writing - the acting - the cinematography - the direction - I have never seen anything like it. Its premature to crown a television show the greatest after only a single season, especially when shows like Six Feet Under, The Wire, and Breaking Bad managed to maintain excellence for 5+ .. not to mention the countless others with stunning first seasons that disintegrated into mediocrity (or worse). Its also impossible to compare a show like TRUE DETECTIVE to something like Game of Thrones - a show whose scale is so unprecedented that it basically writes the rules for its genre as it goes. But in terms of artistic merit and general excellence I would put the first season of TRUE DETECTIVE against any season of any show in any genre ever. Its like The Wire meets Memento meets Se7en with the visual sensibility of Terrence Malick - not to mention that Matthew McConaughey is able to parlay his performance from Dallas Buyers Club into something every bit as great (or, honestly, I think [somehow] even better) - a performance so good it would be downright distracting if not for Woody Harrelson somehow managing to balance him perfectly. What Im saying is you need to watch TRUE DETECTIVE. And then, when youre done, do what I did: watch it again. cue the trailer:
