Im not exactly a world traveler but I have had a few memorable moments of culture shock. One of them occurred in 1988, while I was spending a semester in Washington as an intern at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. I lived at the International Student House near Dupont Circle. It was a fascinating place. One of the residents I found particularly fascinating was a young lady from Pakistan. We often sat together at dinner and talked. We hit it off. One day, she invited me on a picnic at a nearby park. She prepared a delectable feast of sandwiches and finger food. We nibbled, laughed, and stole a few kisses. At one point, however, she looked at me with a puzzled expression on her face and asked: Why do you dress so informally? I replied that, when not wearing a coat and tie for work, I preferred being comfortable in t-shirts and jeans. Well, it makes you look like a peasant, she replied imperiously, as if addressing one of her servants (she apparently had several back home). And that was the end of that. Yummy sandwiches, though.
