Im not usually one to ask for public donations, but I ask for your help in fund raising for The Jimmy Fund/Dana-Farber. I worked at Dana-Farber this summer in a lung cancer research lab and when heading to lunch one day walked by the table where representatives were trying to get people to sign up to run with Dana-Farber for the Boston half marathon on October 12. I, in my overeagerness, signed up right away without considering what it would take to raise the minimum $750 to run! So I find myself in this predicament and ask for your help in raising these funds which are so deeply needed for progress in cancer research. Some of the best cancer researchers in the world are at Dana-Farber who not only are incredibly intelligent, but extremely passionate in their caring desire to help eliminate the immense suffering cancer causes each year. Lung cancer is the leading cancer killer among men and women in the US. 160,000 men and women are expected to die from lung cancer in 2014. It causes more deaths per year than the next leading three combined (colon, pancreatic, and breast). This is only one type of cancer - in one very wealthy country. Globally, it is expected that the number of cancer cases will rise from 14 million to 22 million within the next decade! Insane! One hundred percent of funds raised through this run will support Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Jimmy Fund. The Jimmy Fund is integral and critical to the Institutes success, supporting a combination of cancer research and patient care at Dana-Farber. Funds raised by runners like myself help to ensure the comfort and care of all the patients in treatment at Dana-Farber. In addition, these funds are helping scientists at Dana-Farber shed new light on cancer biology and genetics, conduct ground-breaking clinical trials, and remain in the forefront of cancer research and discovery. Collectively, these efforts are helping to bring us closer than ever before to the ultimate finish line: a world without cancer. Thank you in advance for your support! It really means so much. rundanafarber.org/faf/donorReg/donorPledge.asp?ievent=1108400&supid=409747134
