Im now, finally, back home in Salinas. The John Muir Trail this summer has been spectacular--mile and miles of hiking, waterfalls, mosquitoes, rock walls, ponderosa pines, flowers galore, high passes, wind storms, rain storms, hail storms, snow storms, marmots, pikas, deer, chipmunks, squirrels, bear box stuffed with food, stream crossings, alpine lakes (swimming!), starry skies, three weeks of trail-side campsites, snowy peaks, backpacking getting lighter and lighter with each meal, breakfasts of granola, lunches of trail mix/cliff bars/jerky/cough drops, freeze-dried dinners fortified with olive oil, gallons and gallons of water disinfected with aquamira, carrying my own poop in a sag bag in the Whitney zone, and sharing laughs with new friends from one end to the other. Lots of people have asked me about backpacking alone, but I rarely felt alone. I almost always felt that there were others sharing the experience with me, who were expecting to see me at the next nights camp, or at the top of the next pass.
