Im posting this especially for Carmen Allison Pagliari and my nephews, Krystal Alana Allison-Douglas, and Brad Lawrence. I thought you might want to know how your grandparents met. For everyone else, you might find it a cute story. Im not sure I can call it a love story. I wish so much that I could! My mama had a very hard life growing up. My Papa King was never happy in one place for long and moved my poor grandmother and their children all over creation about every six months. He went from textile mill to textile mill in so many southern towns that my mama never had a chance to make friends. She became introverted and shy with very low self-esteem. But she was beautiful! Tall, svelte model beautiful! Jet black hair and crystal blue eyes! And my Papa King was so strict he wouldnt allow her to even look at a boy! My daddy had a hard life, too, but for different reasons. He came from a stable, God loving family of hard working farmers. My Papa Allison held Bible readings every night and the children were expected to sit still and listen. My dad resented this as a child, though in later years, he was so grateful. My daddy was voted best looking in every year during high school. Sometimes, even now, I meet old women, who, when they find out Im the daughter of Bill Allison, will blush and stammer about how handsome he was. And then, the war came, and he came back a different man. Almost broken. But not quite. Ive been told by old relatives that when my mama and daddy were walking down the street together, people would literally stop in their tracks to stare. They met cruising on the square in Belton. (Funny but I cruised with my friends on the same square when I was a teen.) She rode home on his lap because the car was full of young people. No doubt she was in-love by the time she arrived home. (She was staying with cousins in Williamston at the time.) She always fell fast, and hard without ever thinking. My dad never did. He was a love em and leave em type of man and after a few weeks of dating my mama, he stopped coming by. The wheels began to turn in my mamas head and she quickly became engaged to another man. On the eve of her wedding my daddy stopped to get gas across from her cousins house. Im sure she had been watching and waiting for weeks. She sent a little boy to tell my daddy that his ex was getting married the next day. Knowing my daddy like I do, he had expected to keep my mama hanging on like all the other women. But she was smart! As she knew he would, my daddy proposed that day and they went for a marriage license. She was actually in possession of two marriage licenses at the same time. He drove her to her other beaus house and watched while she gave him his ring back. Truman cried and cried. My daddy showed so much regret later in life for the way this was handled. The rest of their married life was much like the beginning of their courtship. Love story??? I dont think so.
