Im re-reading The Stainless Steel Rat books - all 12, in order - and I came to realise that Harry Harrison had probably passed. I checked with Go-ogle, and he has, dang-nabbit! I offer this as my small homage. He wrote a ripping yarn, with lots of cool Sci-fi gadgetry and a sense of humour rare in the genre. He had the same thread of Humanity that runs through Terry Pratchett: Its wrong to kill people - or any other sentient being. Vonnegut is another with the sympathetic view of people. Both Vonnegut and Harrison served with the US forces during WWII, along with another of my heroes: Heller. They seem to be the equivalent of the War Poets of WWI. I wont go so far as to suggest that if you like any of the three other authors mentioned, then youre going to like Harrison: But how could you not enjoy a book called Star-Smashers of the Galaxy Rangers? It had more ravening Death-Beams per page than any book on the market!
