Im really becoming quite sickened on how racist our little country, as a whole, appears to be. One of our national newspapers, I just noticed in the shop has (on a day following serious atrocities perpetrated in the name of intolerance) a headline to the effect of 1 in 5 Nurses are Foreign. First of all; why does that even matter? Secondly, what does Foreign mean - that they werent born in this country, or that they have black skins? Nobody seems to know or be consistent on this point. Thirdly, Im sure just days ago you were complaining about immigrants without jobs claiming benefits, and now youre complaining about immigrants who have jobs and are playing a vital role in society? Finally; I doubt very much the people who hired these nurses were turning away British Nationals in favour of hiring Foreign nurses. Nor do I expect that they had some kind of quota for hiring foreign people. Rather I expect that they hired the applicants for the jobs they felt were best suited for the role. The 1 in 5 therefore must simply be representative of who is applying for a job most people find unpleasant (dealing with sick people). In fact, I expect, given how racist our country seems to be, unnecessary emphasis was probably placed on hiring the (white) British Nationals! What sickens me most is not that some hack wrote this headline or some editor approved it, its the fact that both of these writers knew they could publish this and put it on the front page in newsagents and supermarkets countrywide and people would nod sagely, agree with them and think Oh thats disgusting, that is. And very, very few would think - the problem here is the people who thought this was valid news!!! And nowhere, that I could see, was an indication that these Foreign nurses were, in any way, doing a substandard job...
