Im sitting here mind blown that I never knew Santa had a Satanic side kick. My wife just schooled me on the old European character of Krampus who was St. Nicks evil side kick. Bad children would be taken to hell by Krampus who would whip them with birch branches and rusty chains, then throw them into a basket and carry them away. Krampus was hairy, horned, had a forked tongue and hoofed feet. He wore bells and his rusty chains clanged along with his hoof beats. Most of the stuff Ive read on this dude says America was too soft for this type of character and as St. Nick took on more of the Dutch influence of Santa Claus, becoming the jolly old fat man in the red suit, he abandoned his evil side and the duty to punish the bad children while rewarding the good. It makes sense to me as an American since weve done all we can to associate Christmas with good instead and dropped the atonement part of our annual sins since we dont really have to anymore because Jesus took one for the team. Its now a birthday celebration instead of a reflection on our behavior. When I moved to Cincinnati as a child I thought it strange that St. Nick came before Santa Claus and it never really made sense to me that wed allow jolly fat men in red to upstage the birth of the baby Jesus. The old German influence around here coupled with dropping Krampus puts it all into perspective.
