Im sure all fellow educators can attest to the fact that there are some days where this thought pops into your mind, What the heck did I get myself into by becoming a teacher?. Whether its because you are fed up with your schools administration, having drama amongst your faculty, had a rough class period with students who you just cant seem to engage, crazy parents, or have stacks and stacks of papers to grade. I guess we can only hope to have more positive days and experiences through out our career that help suppress that disheartening introspective thought! Well, yesterday was just another positive reinforcement for me, solidifying the fact, (that while I may not be perfectly distinguished, according to Charlotte Danielson)... that Im a pretty darn good teacher. And have made a difference in many of my students lives. I went back to visit Hubbard High School yesterday... The school I had taught US and World history at for the previous 9 years. I had to hold back a few times and keep myself from getting emotional, when I saw how excited and appreciative the students were to have me back... even only for a few hours. So are you coming back next year? Why did you leave us? You gonna come and see me graduate, right? I miss learning in your history class! Did you see the pictures of the new Star Wars movie? I passed my AP test and got college credit! I signed up for your classes, now I have a different teacher! WTF Coach K?!? Were just some of the flurry of questions and comments directed towards me while I was visiting with my former students. But some of the best moments were when they just simply said Thank you!... or just wanted a friendly hug. Im not going to bore you guys with more details or get all mushy. What I am just trying to share with all of you... that it really doesnt matter what your occupation is... no matter how many rough or stressful days you may have at work... it only takes a few days like the one I experienced yesterday to reassure yourself that you have chosen the right profession and that you are making a difference in the lives of many. A big thank you for my Hubbard friends and family! The feeling is mutual and I miss and love you all! A part of me will always be a Greyhound!
