Im torn about the whole Facebook Messenger brouhaha, strangely - TopicsExpress

Im torn about the whole Facebook Messenger brouhaha, strangely enough. On the one hand, I kinda hate Facebook in the first place and certainly dont trust them; on the other hand, frankly Ive been running Messenger on my phone and Nexus7 for a while now. Its not really a new thing to me. Ive heard a few people opine that the real issue is that it leaves your devices vulnerable to hackers. So does just having your phone switched on, really. Unless youre going to uninstall every single application that talks to the network, ever, in which case, why have a smart phone? Your iOS or Android phone is a computer, like any other computer. Every minute its actually connected to a network -- including just the telephone network -- it is vulnerable to the possibility that someone will have devised a way to exploit some obscure bug in the code somewhere. If that possibility really bothers you, you probably should cancel your cellphone service entirely. In the end, if I do uninstall Messenger, it will be more because I want to reduce my general use of and exposure to Facebooks servers and services, and not because Messenger, per se, actually represents some new threat.
