Im watching a documentary on the 1989-90 Detroit Pistons.I know Ive sold my soul since I moved to LA and become a fair weather sports fan. But in my heart Im still a Detroit girl who got the honor to live through some of the greatest sports seasons of all time. Being a fan in Detroit is special and like no other place.Whether it was Sparky and the Tigers or Isaiah and the Pistons or our beloved Red Wings or of course my Wolverines, there is a sense of hometown pride that stays with you forever. Some of my fondest memories were Friday nights in the fall at Hometown Foot Ball Games in Northville watching our boys go towards a state championship as the little team that could. Michigan people have more heart than any state in the country. We know how to shovel our cars out of a snowy ditch and throw ice bags in the trunk and make it to school/work on time.Our moms and dads know how to survive the recession and not move away. We love summer bbqs, riding bikes in the sub division, and we swim in public pools with tags on our bathing suits. We like A and W Root Beer and drink Faygo cola. We wear shorts when its 60 Degrees outside and walk 2 miles in a blizzard just to see a kick off. We know the value of rooting for a team all the way to the championship and celebrating with pride and joy as if we had won ourselves. I remember all my Tigers jerseys and Pistons T-Shirts. BAD BOYS! They meant something to all us kids and our families rooted together as we watched from our living rooms on the one TV our family owned. There are many joys of living in CA. But sadly I wish my kids could experience what its like to a hometown true fan. To all my Mich peeps out there..no matter where you are...NEVER FORGET! Never lose that midwestern spirit. It makes us who we are today. Champions.
