Imix is the dragon or the Astecs call it the crocodile. IMIX – The dragon : Has to do with everything primal and can be compared to the undivided waters of creation in which all things are pure potential. It is the primordial Mother, the source of life and expresses issues around divine nurturing, receptivity and therefore this glyph pertains to new beginnings when everything is in a state of possibilities and not actualized. The dragon and/or crocodile is the primal spirit that sleeps beneath the surface of the earth and is the embodiment of birth and new beginnings, the life-giving power that flows up from the Underworld. The classic Maya knew this power as the primordial Earth Monster who symbolizes the holiness of the world. The dragon and crocodile floats in the ocean beneath the world Tree bearing the earth upon his back. This cosmo-conception was widespread throughout pre-Columbian America. The primal reptile or world-bearer was a turtle and this is the reason that the north American Indians always refer to the north American continent as Turtle Island. This is reminiscent of the “primordial soup” from which, according to the current scientific world view, all life began. The Mayan glyph for Imix represents a water lily, often found on tropical ponds where crocodiles and dragons are to be found and the water lily is itself a symbol of the earth’s abundance because of its very high food value. It is number 1 and the number of unity. There is no separation between you and the cosmos.
