Importance of Salah: Allah(Swt) says in the Glorious Quran: Recite (O Muhammad SAW) what has been revealed to you of the Book (the Qurân), and perform As-Salât (IqamâtasSalât). Verily, As-Salât (the prayer) prevents from Al-Fahshâ (i.e. great sins of every kind, )and Al-Munkar (i.e. disbelief, polytheism, and every kind of evil wicked deed, etc.) and the remembering (praising, etc.) of (you by) Allâh (in front of the angels) is greater indeed [than your remembering (praising, etc.) Allâh in prayers, etc.]. And Allâh knows what you do. [Quran - 29:45] It is narrated on the authority of Jabir that he heard the Apostle (may peace and blessings be upon him) saying. Verily between man and between polytheism and unbelief is the negligence of prayer. [Muslim :: Book 1 : Hadith 146 ] The Prophet said in this regard: The first thing that will be judged among a persons deeds on the Day of Resurrection is the prayer. If that is in good order, he will pass the test and prosper, and if that is defective, he will fail the test and will be a loser. (Tirmidhi) Salah at its Proper Time: Abu Dharr reported: The Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) said to me: How would you act when you are under the rulers who would delay the prayer beyond its prescribed time, or they would make prayer a dead thing as far as its proper time is concerned? I said: What do you command? He (the Holy Prophet) said: Observe the prayer at Its proper time, and if you can say it along with them do so, for it would be a superetogatory prayer for you. Khalaf (one of the narrators in the above hadith) has not mentioned beyond their (prescribed) time. [Muslim :: Book 4 : Hadith 1353] Umar ibn al-Khattab reported that a man asked the Prophet: Messenger of Allah, what action is dearest to Allah Most High? The Prophet said, Prayer at its proper time. The one who does not pray has no religion. Prayer is the main pillar of the religion. (Baihaqi) Offer Salah near the First Row: The Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) used to pass through the row from one side to the other; he used to set out chests and shoulders in order, and say: Do not be irregular. And he would say: Allah and His angels bless those who are near the first rows. [Dawud :: Book 2 : Hadith 664] The Prophet(Pbuh) said: ...Pray as you have seen me praying.. [Bukhari :: Book 1 :: Volume 11 :: Hadith 604] Starting the Salah: Narrated Wail ibn Hujr: I witnessed the Prophet (peace_be_upon_him) raise his hands in front of his ears when he began to pray. I then came back and saw them (the people) raising their hands up to their chest when they began to pray... [Dawud :: Book 3 : Hadith 727] Obligation for a Sutra (Barrier): He (sallallaahu alaihi wa salaam) used to say: Do not pray except towards a sutra, and do not let anyone pass in front of you, but if someone continues (to try to pass) then fight him, for he has a companion (ie. a shaytaan) with him (Ibn Khuzaimah in his Saheeh (1/93/1) with a sound Isnad) Placing Hands on the chest: Narrated Tawus: The Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) used to place his right hand on his left hand, then he folded them strictly on his chest in prayer. [Dawud :: Book 3 : Hadith 758] He used to place the right arm on the back of his left palm, wrist and forearm (Abu Dawood, Nasaai and Ibn Khuzaimah (1/54/2)) Prayer Not Completed If Surah Fatiha Not Recited: Ubada b. as-Samit reported from the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him ): He who does not recite Fatihat al-Kitab is not credited with having observed the prayer. [Muslim :: Book 4 : Hadith 771] Abu Huraira reported: The Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) said: If anyone observes prayer in which he does not recite Umm al-Quran(Surah Fatiha), It is deficient [he said this three times] and not complete. It was said to Abu Huraira: At times we are behind the Imam. He said: Recite it inwardly..[Muslim :: Book 4 : Hadith 775] Narrated Ubadah ibn as-Samit: We were behind the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) at the dawn prayer, and he recited (the passage), but the recitation became difficult for him. Then when he finished, he said: Perhaps you recite behind your imam? We replied: Yes, it is so, Apostle of Allah. He said: Do not do so except when it is Fatihat al-Kitab, for he who does not recite it is not credited with having prayed. [Dawud :: Book 3 : Hadith 822] Saying Ameen Loudly Behind the Imam: Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab that Said ibn al-Musayyab and Abu Salama ibn Abd ar-Rahman told him from Abu Hurayra that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, When the imam says Amin, say Amin, for the one whose Amin coincides with the Amin of the angels - his previous wrong actions are forgiven him. Ibn Shihab said, The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to say Aameen (extending it). [Malik :: Book 3 : Hadith 3.12.47] Narrated Abu Huraira: Allahs Apostle said, Say Amen when the Imam says Ghair-il-maghdubi alaihim wala-ddal-lin; not the path of those who earn Your Anger (such as Jews) nor of those who go astray (such as Christians); all the past sins of the person whose saying (of Amin) coincides with that of the angels, will be forgiven. [Bukhari :: Book 1 :: Volume 12 :: Hadith 749] Narrated AbuHurayrah: When the Apostle of Allah (peace_be_upon_him) recited the verse Not of those with whom Thou art angry, nor of those who go astray, he would say Amin so loudly that those near him in the first row would hear it. [Dawud :: Book 3 : Hadith 934] Raising of Hands Till Shoulders Before bowing (Rafa Al-Yadein): Yahya related to me from Malik from Ibn Shihab from Salim ibn Abdullah from Abdullah ibn Umar that the Messengerof Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, used to raise his hands to the level of his shoulders when he began the prayer and when he raised his head from the ruku he raised them in the same way, saying, Allah hears whoever praises him, our Lord and praise belongs to You. He did not raise them in the sujud. [Malik :: Book 3 : Hadith 3.5.17] Ibn Umar reported that the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him), when he stood up for prayer, used to raise his hands apposite the shoulders and then recited takbir (Allah-o-Akbar), and when he was about to bow he again did like it and when he raised himself from the ruku (bowing posture) he again did like it, but he did not do it at the time of raising his head from prostration. [Muslim :: Book 4 : Hadith 759] Following the Imam: Narrated Aisha: The mother of the believers: Allahs Apostle during his illness prayed at his house while sitting whereas some people prayed behind him standing. The Prophet beckoned them to sit down. On completion of the prayer, he said, The Imam is to be followed: bow when he bows, raise up your heads (stand erect) when he raises his head and when he says, Sami a-l-lahu liman-hamida (Allah heard those who sent praises to Him) say then Rabbana wa laka-l-hamd (O our Lord! All the praises are for You), and if he prays sitting then pray sitting. [Bukhari :: Book 1 :: Volume 11 :: Hadith 656]
