Important Personal Invitation To join a Bus Tour to View and Understand Industrial Frac Sand Mining and associated Transport and Processing Facilities in nearby Wisconsin. Sponsored by Allamakee County Protectors – Education Campaign Deadline for Reserving a Seat for Bus Tour: 8 PM, Friday, August 2nd. Summary of this Special Opportunity: Our tour will get participants up close and personal in order to view extensive and closely packed mining operations and processing/transport facilities. A lot has happened to those landscapes in recent months. The individual who will be guiding us is a farmer who lives in this area; who knows the history of how mining companies got started in western Wisconsin; who has detailed knowledge of how each mining company is currently operating; and who knows what steps could have and/or should have been taken by local communities and individuals in advance of mining; etc. We could not have a more informed or even-minded escort through the maze of frac sand mining. He has led dozens of tours to the same area for investigative reporters and various organizations located from coast to coast. We will also experience massive new developments, relevant to our area, that were not in-place until recently. Become well informed! If you haven’t been up close and personal to an operating industrial frac sand mine before, and few actually have, this is likely to be your best chance! The bus ride itself is an important opportunity for sharing ideas and learning from one another. Join a rewarding day of education and camaraderie. Bring digital cameras, video cameras, smart phones, etc. to capture images. Enjoy a really good (and inexpensive) opportunity to grasp exactly what we DO NOT want to see in Allamakee County or anywhere else in our precious part of the ecologically, scenically, agriculturally and historically rich Driftless Area. Tour Date: Tuesday, August 6. Timing: Our guide suggested a weekday tour to be sure EOG (Texas-based Enron Oil & Gas) will be running their semis and other equipment, for a realistic idea about what mining operations are. If not Aug. 6th the date would have been even sooner, making it more difficult for potential participants to make decisions. Bus: Capacity of 56, with restroom. Bring snacks, cooler and any drinks you want. No glass bottles. Boarding Bus: Lansing, parking lot at baseball diamond at 7 AM Sharp. New Albin, Bandstand on Main Street, at 7:15 AM Sharp. Return: New Albin on or before 6:45 PM, and Lansing on or before 7 PM. Lunch: We will stop for lunch where a McDonald’s, a Hardees’s and a Subway are side-by-side. Cost: $17.00 per person if 56 individuals reserve a seat. Funds will be collected at boarding. Cost will be slightly higher if fewer people attend. If less than 36 reserve space (cost $25 per person), tour will be cancelled. There is no way around this as ACP only has a minute budget, and must pay for the bus in advance. Reserve your Seat: To avoid confusion, reservations will be “first-come, first served.” You will not have a reservation until you speak directly to Betty Zarwell or to me (Ric). [My cell phone: 563-419-4991. Betty’s cell phone: 563-419-1939. Home phone: 563-538-4991.] For several days leading up to the deadline, I will be working outdoors and only checking emails at night. Our list of passengers is growing rather quickly. Be sure to reserve your seat ASAP. Deadline for Reserving a Seat for Bus Tour: 8 PM, Friday, August 2nd. Thank you!
