Important message from Joshua Wong, student leader, who has just been released from police custody where he was assaulted by policemen. We need the police and government to realise that they are not above the law, and that we will hold them accountable for their unlawful actions: Hong Kong student protest convener and icon, Joshua Wong, was arrested yesterday in Mongkok. Joshua stated, after being released on conditional bail today, that during his arrest several cops abused him, and tried to hurt his private parts, some even tried to go for his testicles. This rampant violence by Hong Kong police has been going unchecked, and is adamantly defended by the pro-establishment politicians, the government and the chief of police. During the course of the Umbrella Revolution, many protesters, very much peaceful and non-violent, some only back-chatting at the police or verbally expressing their anger, were assaulted beyond what the guidelines allowed and beyond reason. In addition, innocent bystanders who did not participate in the occupation, or merely were there in support of it, or donating their resources to the cause, were also abused by the police, who have abandoned their duty to protect the citizenry and act according to the law. Ironically, pro-government politicians and civilian factions have accused protesters of violating the Rule of Law, completely disregarding, even praising, the brutal violence of the cops, and their own supporters.
