Improbable as it may seem, one day poor countries may actually benefit from their natural resources. Until then, the pundits describe what actually happens as a paradox - the curse of plenty some call it - in which people living in countries with large petrochemical reserves actually end up worse off after natural resources are discovered because of the way revenues are disbursed, currency fluctuations and related corruption. Nigeria,for example, is the sixth-largest producer of oil in the world and one of the main suppliers of oil to American customers. Yet even though the West African nation is awash in oil money, much of its population is destitute.
