Imâm Mâlik Listening to, and taking admonition from, the people of knowledge Narrated by Khalf ibn ‘Amr: “I heard Mâlik ibn Anas say: ‘I did not issue a legal ruling (fatwa) until I asked those who were more knowledgeable than me, as to whether I was in a position to do so. I asked Rabee’ah, and I asked Yahya ibn Sa’eed and they ordered me to it (i.e. to give fatwa).’ So I said to him: ‘O Abaa Abdillaah! What if they told you not to?’ He said: ‘I would not do so; it is not befitting for a man view himself entitled to something until he enquires (about it) to those more knowledgeable than he.’” Lessons: The Muslim should return to the trustworthy scholars; those firmly grounded in knowledge (râsikhîn). He should turn away from the evil callers of late that encourage the youth to reject the scholarly consensus (ijma’) and follow their desires in affairs which should be returned to the scholars. The scholars are respected, their advice is appreciated and their understanding is to be referred to due to their striving and experience.
