In 1970 Lolita was captured and sold to the Miami Seaquarium for $6,000. She was briefly reunited with a whale name Hugo who was captured from the same family 2 years earlier...however he died from mysterious causes in 1980 and Lolita has been alone ever since. The tank she resides in is barely as long as her body making it the smallest in North America. Lolita is the only remaining orca of the 58 who have been captured from her home waters around Puget Sound, Washington State. Thankfully though it looks like Lolitas torment is almost over and she will be going home!!! Due to gross mistreatment and her eligibility on the endangered species list she could be released to a coastal sanctuary off of San Juan Island in Washington State. Lolita would feel tides and waves for the first time since August 8, 1970 and could possibly be reunited with her 85 year old mom! Truly a whale of a tale :)
