In 1975 I was a 6th grade trombone player in the Holly Pond Bronco Band and we were attending our first ever Mid South Marching Festival (it was also the first marching contest I had ever been to). Our show was Black Saddles, Muchachos, Prepare Ye, and See You in September. We won one of those big 4-poster trophies that Saturday and we all bought a Mid South t-shirt (for $3 each) and we wore them to school on Monday (if we had gotten 2s we were to wear them Tuesday). Well, 39 years later (scary, I know), the Holly Pond Bronco Band once again attended the Mid South Marching Festival and once again brought home not only a big 4-poster trophy, but also a medal for our drum major, a trophy for our majorettes, a trophy for our color guard, and a plaque for our percussion! Thats right, WE GOT ALL ONES AT MID SOUTH!!!! They also gave us a plaque for getting all superior ratings in every category called the Bob Rush Memorial Award. I am proud beyond words of all of you!!! Without going into a lot of explanation, just take my word for it when I say that it is no easy feat to do what you did Saturday. If you go to that particular contest you had better bring it, and that is just exactly what you did. ALL of your hard work and preparation combined to put you over the top and bingo, you came away victorious. You old kids have proven that we should never give up on a goal and I love that about you and all you rookies stepped up and believed us when we said we needed the best from you and you gave it. A big thanks to all the parents and others who came and cheered us on, that helps us more than you know! Now I wish we could just say good enough but guess what, those judges gave some things to fix for the rest of the contest season so.............we will have rehearsal as usual on Tuesday and Thursday but on Wednesday, we are NOT going to stay after school for practice----- consider it a well-deserved rest and also a pay back for any minutes I may have held you over at other practices. Have a great rest of the weekend, we will see you on Tuesday and I will be wearing my new Mid South t-shirt (for which I paid $15). Roll Band Roll! :)
