In 1980 I was one one of the four originals who Founded the Pacific Mozart Ensemble. One of our greatest associations leading to a great and groundbreaking series of concerts including a show at Carnegie Hall and at Ground Zero in New York, in Berkeley and San Francisco as well, was our association with and adoption by MacArthur Genius Award winner, Meredith Monk. In this video we are in the Hamilton Tower in the middle of the Napa Sonoma vineyards north of our homer in San Francisco, a building that was designed by Ann Hamilton as a performance space, a double helix! Open to the sky with a well at the bottom, it is entered thru two slits each leading to one of the helical ramps which connect only at the roof. In this video is Merediths professional group and us, the gray chorus... the PME ( now called Pacific Edge Voices).. perform Songs of Ascension going UP the ramps! In my opinion, Meredith is one of three great modern composers in America today.. along with John Adams who is one of our closest sponsors having performed several of his choral works from his operas, the ultra controversial Death of Klinghoffer and Nixon in China, and Philip Glass whose works for chorus e have featured many times. Our final concert at the tower was an evening concert for local vintners and townsfolk... in the rain! Remember that the tower is open at top! We filled one helical ramp while the audience filled the other standing in the rain and listening to the music of Meredith Monk. https://youtube/watch?v=c3mSVR3xtfU&list=RDc3mSVR3xtfU#t=276
