In 1988, just before Easter, I went to the stunning Winter Palace and actually saw original bullet holes in the walls. The filthy habits and provocative bravado of courtiers in Nikolais and Katarinas parties, and the widespread famine and VD, led to insane behaviour, pink wigs for the chaps, and burlesque. The revolt was not wholly because they were cavorting in court, but because society was in agrarian sectors and town soviets, depressed, due to population migration to cities. The number of people was rising, and there were no jobs. Baboushkas sold lucky heather, they were so poor. The genocide of the ruling gentry was due also to the senates lieing about the date too on the State newspaper. This led to a change in calendars from the Orthodox Gregar calendar to the modern day system with a difference of 13 days such that the moon was back in line with the Roman date.
