In 1989, Dr. David Strachan formulated the hygiene hypothesis, which states that lack of exposure to “infections” in early childhood to diseases that are transmitted by contact with older siblings could be a cause of the rapid rise in atopic disorders over the last 30 to 40 years. He further theorized that this lack of exposure is not only caused by the trend towards smaller families, but also by improved household amenities and higher standards of personal cleanliness. Subsequent researches largely confirmed that lack of early childhood exposure to infectious symbiotic microorganisms (e.g. gut flora or probiotics) and parasites increases susceptibility to allergic diseases by suppressing the natural development of the immune system.
