In 2000 Barden Stevenot built an amphitheater on his property for our community to enjoy. We give Barden our deepest gratitude for his hard work and commitment to the arts. I remember going down there in the spring of 2000 and watching Barden himself moving earth with a bulldozer. A concrete pad was poured 9 days before we opened. PG&E hooked up power the day we opened and that night Sheila Doyle spoke the first words to an audience from that stage. “Two households, both alike in dignity...” she began, and a Murphys tradition was born. When Al Munari bought the property he recognized what the summer programming meant to the community and chose to continue the tradition. To him we say thanks, thanks, and ever thanks. The property has changed hands again and the Cornelia B. Stevenot Memorial Amphitheater will no longer be our summer home. But change is opportunity! Murphys Creek Theatre is proud and excited to be joining forces with Brice Station Winery to carry on the tradition of outdoor summer Shakespeare in Murphys. This summer’s production of 12th Night, directed by Tara Kayton (The Santaland Diaries, The Imaginary Invalid), will open June 13 at Brice Station Vineyards, 3353 East Highway 4, Murphys. Tara has assembled an amazing cast and we’re thrilled to be entering into this new collaboration with Brice Station’s owners Dolores and Stuart Mast. Their generosity and spirit help make this change thrilling. We hope to see you at our new summer venue to celebrate the next phase of Murphys Creek Theatre’s ongoing commitment to artistic excellence in the Mother Lode.
