In 2004, fellow archaeologist Daniel Ewers & myself were tasked with surveying part of the Irvine Ranch, in Orange County, CA, for The Keith Companies (TKC). There were 3 parts to the 389 acre site: (1) the largest area was the west side, which was being used for a test track of steep hills (which, of course, we had to go down in an ancient company truck!); (2) the second largest area was the eastern side & once home to the original 1970s-era Lion Country Safari (LCS), which, in 2004, was partly used by a tree company, the Verizon Ampitheater, a “Power On” Toyota dealership, & Wild Rivers Water Park; & (3) an area outside the park, which had held tenant farmers and razed homes. The majority of the photos (#1-12) are what was left of LCS as Daniel & I saw it in 2004. Most of the items were now within Wild Rivers. The older photos were found on the Internet. The last photograph (#13) was of a mano & metate found in the tenant farmer section of the property in 2004. I think I may speak for Dan, when I say that this survey was one of the best surveys we have ever done … Daniel went on to bigger & better jobs; earning his Master’s from CSU Fullerton & becoming an expert on Rock Art. I went back into business for myself & am now retired & doing Historical Archaeology for fun … however, Dan & I will always have the LCS survey as one of our greatest projects!
