In 2011, severe drought, famine and a widespread food crisis produced what was referred to at the time as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. At its height, famine had been declared in over six regions of Somalia. Across the horn of Africa it was estimated that 12 million people were suffering from hunger and malnutrition. Without food and water, hundreds of thousands of people made the long journey to refugee camps in Kenya and Ethiopia in search of assistance. Presbyterians in Canada responded with overwhelming generosity and contributed nearly $720,000 to PWS&D’s East Africa appeal.
