In 2012 I wrote a short graphic novel called Nostalgia, centered around the effects and societal implications of CMEs on technology and terrestrial communication the very same year this happened: m.huffpost/uk/entry/5619843 I spent a lot of time musing over the effects such a catastrophic solar event would have, with the conclusion that most people wouldnt have any coping strategy in a world without technology. Its a stark reminder that were more dependent and vulnerable than ever! Coronal mass ejections hitting earth would cause serious trouble for us, our technology and our accident response networks. If a CME hit earth it would be like a huge electromagnetic pulse, downing financial, medical networks not to mention frying satellites. Which could lead to cutting communication for not only us but for planes, emergency services and disaster relief teams. Modern civilisation would be forced into a downgrade. But rolling back to analogue wouldnt be easy as were so dependent! Never forget how to live without technology. Never disregard that knowledge as irrelevant. We are not exempt. This happens, and its just a matter of when, not IF. As useful as it is, Technology is only on loan to us and that privilege can be stripped from us at any time without notice. And while you may well brush it off as merely science fiction, this shows how close we actually came to that gloomy dystopian vision I had 4 years ago.
