In America, freedom of religion “has not flowered into maturity - TopicsExpress

In America, freedom of religion “has not flowered into maturity in religion…freedom of religion has in fact turned into culture-enslaved religion. Far from being radical and dynamic, most religion is a lethargic rubber stamp on worldly wisdom, leading us not to freedom but…to the degrading slavery of being a child of this age…when I look at the results of this most extensive experiment in the freedom of religion that the world has ever seen, I am not impressed. Surveyed as a whole, we are immersed in probably the most immature and mindless religion, ranging from infantile to adolescent, that any culture has ever witnessed” (From the book “Under the Unpredictable Plant,” by pastor Eugene Peterson). True Christian faith, according to the Bible, is to be demonstrated by radically transformed lives…by people who live for the cause of Jesus Christ as the most important thing in their lives…by people who obey the Bible as absolute, timeless truth…by those who, by the way they live, inspire others to want what they have…by those who realize “he is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose” (as Christian martyr Jim Elliot once famously said). Living by worldly values flavored with a few self-chosen “Christian concepts” is not biblical Christianity, but it IS the so-called Christianity of a growing number of people in our country today. The reality, as Dietrich Bonhoeffer (German pastor murdered by the Nazi’s during WWII) said, is “When Christ calls someone, He bids them to come and die.” “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me” (Galatians 2:20, NIV).
