In Canada in the late 1800s, sardines was a major fishing industry. With newer technology in cannery, the sardines could be caught, preserved and even canned onboard the fishing vessels. This resulted in a lot of trading and it became an important commodity as sardines could be shipped far inland and be exported without the sardines going bad. Trading in sardines became fast and furious, and prices reached higher and higher prices. Fishermen abandoned other types of fishing and concentrated on just one commodity: sardines. In one fishing town, in the midst of frenzied buying and selling, some fool opened up a tin of sardines and tasted the fish. To his horror, it tasted bad as the fish was not canned properly. The village fool tried warn the merchants at the marketplace that the fish was bad, to which an astute trader replied, these tins of sardines are not meant for eating, they are are trading. The above can be used as analogy for things people buy and sell, including cameras, cars, watches and off course any other expensive toys.
