In Captain America #117 (Sept. 1969), Colan and writer-editor Stan Lee created the Falcon, the first African-American superhero in mainstream comic books A distinction here : the Falcon was the 1st African American superhero, but TChalla was the first Black/African superhero, and I think the latter was a more important character in pop culture, 1966 vs. 1969. There was also Robbie Robertson in Spider-Man (1967) and of course Luke Cage (1972.) Marvel led the way.
