In Genesis 4, Cain and Abel brought their sacrifices before the Lord. And it was said that the Lord had respect for Abels offering, but He had no respect for Cains offering. The Hebrew word for the word respect is shaah which means to gaze or to look at intently. The short definition means regard. Therefore, the Lord gazed intently at Ables offering since this is what the Lord wanted, but the Lord didnt even look at Cains offering. Why? Because Cain was disobedient and decided to offer what to. When his countenance fell, he decided to let sin rule over him. Cain became wroth and indignant because he didnt he was treated fairly, and out of jealousy and hatred towards his brother, he killed Abel. It seems its this way with some people, today. They feel that they dont need to be obedient to God, authority, their parents, etc. Their offering is whatever they feel like be it behavior, attitude, efforts, etc. When its not acceptable, they become wroth and indignant. They allow sin to rule over them, and God eventually turns them over to a reprobate mind and pours His wrath out on them. (See Romans chapter 1.) The key to living for Christ and for taking up our cross, daily, is OBEDIENCE to God and His truth. The Spirit doesnt dwell in a temple, anymore, but dwells in our hearts. When were disobedient, it grieves the Spirit. Eventually, the Spirit will leave us if we continue to defy the Lord. Christ said that we dont live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God. This includes His commandments, direction, etc. He tells us these things for our own good so that we can learn what true inner happiness is through our obedience to Him.
