In Isaiah 40:2 and 61:7, the Lord will give Jerusalem double - TopicsExpress

In Isaiah 40:2 and 61:7, the Lord will give Jerusalem double honor. It is His personality to give double honor in place of shame. What He does for Jerusalem is indicative of what kind of person He is. This is what He is like. When we fail, yet we come to Him in sincere repentance, He desires to give honor. He does not give us what we deserve. We deserve shame. He takes away shame and gives double honor. Why does God command His people to speak comfort to Jerusalem? God speaks comfort to those who are in the process of repenting of their sin (Isa. 40:1). Somebody could say, “Comfort them? Look at them! They are not yet obeying You.” The Lord says, “Yes, comfort them. Speak comfort.” We are to cry out for them and speak to them that their sin will be fully pardoned. In context, this is talking about the Jewish people in the generation the Lord returns, but my point is not that right now, though that is a glorious point. The point I am making is—this is what God is like. When we deserve to have our sin crush us, the Lord comforts us. When we deserve shame, He speaks comfort. In other words, this is what He is like—He is speaking comfort to you right now as we sincerely seek to obey and love Him, even in our weakness. Beloved, when I feel His comfort and His honor over my life even after I have failed I say to Him, “What kind of God are You that this is how You talk, this is how You think, and this is how You want us to talk? Wow!”
