In Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, Chris Pine boldly goes where several others have already trodden. Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck have all had a crack at Tom Clancys best known creation, so expectations for this werent sky high high, but this is actually a credible reboot. While it might not be the most original feature on the block, after the rigours of the likes of 12 Years A Slave, its refreshing to sit down in front of a piece of slick, unabashed popcorn and actually enjoy the process. Essentially a series of punch-ups and chases, punctuated with episodes of unfathomable espionage, the film is ably directed by Kenneth Branagh (who also takes on the role of the pantomime-ish Russian villain). It generates genuine suspense and never takes itself too seriously. Keira Knightly does a convincing American accent and theres a blink-and-youll-miss-it cameo from Brooksides Sinbad, thats sure to raise a smile. 4.2 stars.
