In March I saw the opening of the movie “GirlRising”. Former girl slaves gather together outside the house where another girl is still bonded in slavery and sing songs of protest in Nepal … In Ethiopia after their father dies, a 13yr old girl is to be married off. Her older brother protests the marriage and volunteers to sell everything he owns. She refuses the marriage and chooses school with his help. These “pre-teen” girls know their birthright to a life without abuse, violation and oppression – a life with opportunity, freedom and education. Even after setbacks, they rebound and repeatedly continue their efforts. They chose to be constructive and positive despite their abuse. Their inner strength and light inspires. Be it poetry, art or counseling others on a talk radio show in Peru, Cambodia or Haiti, these girls figured out what they’re interested in. They see the big picture. Something is different about this new generation of kids. In the movie, an 11yr old girl sold into marriage declared, “I have not forgotten my vow… I will return to school. I dare you to tell me it’s a waste of time. And if you kill me, there will be other girls to rise up and prevail… I am the beginning of a different story in Afghanistan. Do you see it? (look into my eyes) I am change”. youtube/watch?v=BJsvklXhYaE girlrising
