† In Memory - OCT 23: **1950 – Al Jolson, Lithuanian-American actor and singer (b. 1886) Al Jolson (born Asa Yoelson; May 26, c. 1886 – October 23, 1950) was an American singer, film actor, and comedian. At the peak of his career, he was dubbed The Worlds Greatest Entertainer. He enjoyed performing in blackface makeup, a theatrical convention since the mid 19th century. With his unique and dynamic style of singing black music, such as jazz and blues, he was later credited with single-handedly introducing African-American music to white audiences. As early as 1911 he became known for fighting against black discrimination on Broadway. Jolson collapsed and died of a massive heart attack on October 23, 1950. O:) **2005 – William Hootkins, American actor (b. 1948) William Michael Hoot Hootkins (July 5, 1948 – October 23, 2005) was an American character actor, most famous for supporting roles in Hollywood blockbusters such as Star Wars, Batman, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Hardware. Hootkins was born in Dallas, Texas. At the age of 15, Hootkins found himself caught up in the FBIs investigation into the assassination of President John F. Kennedy when he was interviewed about Mrs. Ruth Paine, the woman harboring Marina Oswald, the Russian wife of the presumed assassin Lee Harvey Oswald. He had been studying Russian with Paine at his school, St. Marks in Dallas, where he also developed his taste for theatre, joining the same drama group as Tommy Lee Jones. Hootkins would later say that, since Jones was better looking and got all the best parts, I supported from then on in. Hootkins died of pancreatic cancer in Santa Monica, California in 2005 at the age of 57....... O:)
