In September 2000, world leaders signed up to eight Millennium Development Goals and key among those was an aim to reduce the number of children who die, before their fifth birthday, in developing countries. Significant progress has been made, which is great news. But as efforts yield success, the population of Africa is rising rapidly and that in itself is a serious worry for the long term survival of the people of Africa and the planet. Population Matters advocates that there should be universal access to family planning. We call for the international community to devote more development funding to family planning and for all governments to have universal access as a near-term goal.
