In Smiths Parish, the most visited area is John Smiths Bay. A most beautiful beach ! While John Smiths Bay is a lovely and most visited area, just on the west side a few feet away lies Gravelly Bay. Gravelly Bay is a rock rimmed inlet. It abounds with sharp and jagged crags of limestone, over which surging tides tumble and roar - hence its name. Dividing the two bays is a somewhat interesting point - great for climbing and picture taking... The Cantons were an old sailoring family of Smiths Parish. (their exploits recorded as early as 1747). The first Canton - Captain James Canton sailed the Bermudian schooner Recovery on a privateering cruise around the West Indies. On the landlubber side of the Cantons... we have cabinet makers, silver smiths, watchmakers and jewellers. Documents show that the family grew and moved to Devonshire Parish and the City of Hamilton, but all seemed to return to their beloved Smiths Parish.
