In Todays NST on page 15 my son and his co-author argued whether university students are customers or not. Some times ago some universities labelled them as clients. The public at large and the administrators were beginning to redefine the universal institutions as factories, market place, etc to suit their ill-conceived ideas of what university is all about. We as lecturers have a duty to fulfil to teach the students the knowledge in their chosen disciplines so as to prepare them for a life long learning and to respect knowledge. Armed with some skills in IT, communication, good conversationists in BM and English, good personality, trustworthiness and equipped with scientific philosophy, some of them may find worth while to study at the universities. We dont expect every Mat, Murthu or Lim to attend the university but 100 % Malaysian must be able to read and write and ethical.
